History

60+ Years of Philately

The Liberian Philatelic Society was founded in 1955 by Prof. H. H. Bartlett but didn't become really active until Col. Henry R. Rogers became president following Prof. Bartlett's death. Rogers grew the society to nearly 150 members and began publishing the first LPS newsletter.  This first newsletter was edited by O. E. Lynch until 1973 when Stanley DeShay took over as editor.  This original newsletter ran for 100 editions.

DeShay shifted the format of the newsletter to a small format journal and in 1978, Roy P. Mackal and Henry Chlanda shifted it to a larger format journal.  Loaded with information on Liberian Philately, their Journal of the Liberian Philatelic Society became the top publication for philatelists interested in Liberia and it ran for 158 editions.

Journal of the Liberian Philatelic Society

Starting in 2018, the Journal went under a change to give it a more modern look.  All new journals as well as the LPS Letters and Newsletters dating back to 1966 are available to LPS members in our Members Only section of this website.

The Future

With his retirement as being President/Editor in early 2018, Henry Chlanda asked Bryant Korn to step in as the new LPS President.  Bryant accepted and he quickly formed a new board of directors.  Manfred Beier being the new Vice President and Webmaster, Travis Searls being the new Secretary/Treasurer and LPS Journal editor.  Alan Cecilio and Jeff Kelly both accepted director positions.  Together with our membership, we will share our knowledge and help spread the word that collecting Liberian stamps and postal history can be very challenging and enjoyable!
